| Yuma Elementary
School is one of seven elementary schools in Scott County, Virginia.
There are approximately 170 students
enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade. The school is located on
state route 614, approximately eight miles south of Gate City,
Virginia, and one mile north of the Tennessee
state line.
The first school built in this immediate area
was started in 1884 and was named Cleveland in honor of President Grover
Cleveland. The school contained both elementary and secondary students until
1955, when the secondary students were consolidated into Gate City High
School. The present building was first used in the fall of 1968. At that
time the name was changed from Cleveland to "Yuma Elementary School".
The Yuma Community is easy
access to the Tri-Cities, and all that they have to offer. Just a
short drive from the Tennessee border, Yuma residents enjoy shopping,
dining, theatre, and almost every recreational activity imaginable.
Many Yuma residents also find employment in the Tri Cities area, and take
advantage of the short commute to and from work.
The Yuma community is well
known for its annual "Tour de Possum Creek and Family Fun Bicycle Rides.
"This event attracts bikers from all over the United States, and is held
during Kingsport's annual Fun Fest. The Tour de Possum Creek has been
a huge success since it first began six years ago. This past July,
there were over 900 registered riders who enjoyed pedaling their bicycles on
three different routes along the beautiful back roads of Yuma, Virginia by
the banks of Possum Creek.
Yuma is a fully accredited
school in the state of Virginia. Due to the hard work of both students
and teachers, not to mention the great support of parents and community,
Yuma has a history of outstanding academic achievement regarding the
Virginia State SOLs. The school continues to succeed and strives to
make the future even better.
